ABOUT THIS ENTRY
The signature Manningcast AR Table is the latest and greatest innovation in sports media, utilizing complex augmented reality technology to deliver real-time, three-dimensional enhanced analysis capabilities, enhancing the viewing experience while delivering the expert POV of sports legend Peyton Manning.
How does this represent “Excellence in Engagement”?
The Manningcast, the flagship offering from Omaha Productions, has long been at the forefront of broadcast innovation. Disrupting the media landscape is the name of the game for Peyton Manning’s media company, as the Manningcast has made a name for itself delivering a more personality-driven, engaging alternative to the dry analyst commentary of legacy broadcasts. It’s only fitting that for the show’s third season, the team would introduce a tech innovation to continue breaking the mold of a football telecast.
Omaha Productions prides itself on the excellence of sports storytelling. Having mastered the sports analysis beloved by listeners, Peyton refused to deliver more of the same. By developing the AR Table, the Manningcast better connects with fans and provides a one-of-a-kind combination of real-time analysis with the most qualified experts.
Objective
The impetus for the project began last season when the Omaha Productions team noticed Manning’s mid-game recap capabilities were limited. The show takes place not in a traditional sports studio, seated at a desk with talking heads, but rather filmed in an at-home environment, meaning the production needed to find a creative way to give Manning access to the graphics that drive other programs—but better.
Importantly, a key piece of feedback Omaha Productions received in the show’s first two seasons was that viewers especially enjoyed the in-depth football analysis from the hosts, especially the perspectives shared by the brothers, who know firsthand what it’s like on the field.
It was clear that the Manningcast needed an X-factor, something special to elevate the show’s commentary capabilities.
Strategy & Execution
The tech’s creation was born from a collaboration between Omaha, ESPN, NFL Next Gen Stats, and agency Girraphic, and debuted in NFL Week 4 during the Seahawks-Giants Monday night game.
Rather than relying on replay footage, the table brings action into 3D right in front of Manning in real time, projected above the table for viewers at home to see. On-site, Omaha Productions producers discuss with Manning which plays he wants to see on the AR table and set up the tech for use following a commercial break. Then, Manning can show viewers in augmented reality how a play went or could have gone, bringing his field-tested decision-making prowess directly to broadcast.
