The Coach Knapp Memorial Fund
The 6th Annual Awards
- Best Engagement for Good
ABOUT THIS ENTRY
The Coach Knapp Memorial Fund was created by Greg Knapp's wife, Charlotte and friend/agent, Jeff Sperbeck, to honor the legacy of Greg who tragically passed away in July 2021 after being hit by a distracted driver while he was bicycling. Knapper was known for climbing the stadium stairs before every single one of his NFL games. We created the Knapp Stair Climb to carry on his pre-game tradition while also raising awareness and funds for the dangers of distracted driving.
How does this represent “Excellence in Engagement”?
This campaign represents a new benchmark for fan engagement by bringing to the forefront the dangers of distracted driving, and the role each individual plays in helping reduce the number of distracted driving crashes and deaths. With the help of the NFL and NCAA teams involved we look to continue to exponentially spread awareness on the role digital dependency plays, and the tragic affects it could have in scenarios such as driving on the road. Helping inspire others to put the phones down and pick your head up when you're on the road. With an overall goal of taking this beyond these football stadiums and mobilizing the everyday fan to take action.

Strategy & Execution
Knapper was known for climbing the stadium stairs before every single one of his NFL games. We created the Knapp Stair Climb to carry on his pre-game tradition while also raising awareness and funds for the dangers of distracted driving. During weeks 1-17 of the NFL season (11) NFL teams and (4) NCAA teams completed the inaugural stair climb - the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, New York Jets, Los Angeles Rams, San francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fordham University, Sacramento State, Ripon College & University of Oregon, with over 300 coaches, players, alumni and former players ran the stairs. They posted their stair climbs on social media via Instagram and Twitter/X, challenging other teams to participate next.
