As baseball pursues its mission of ensuring the sport remains America’s pastime for decades to come, there’s a third baseman in Houston creating a blueprint for how to do so. Alex Bregman is a media machine with big ambitions: he wants to become the “LeBron James of baseball.” For the modern athlete, that vision entails much more than taking the title of best player; it means building a brand and a media empire that has a lifespan well-beyond his playing days.

Bregman already has a head start. During the 2018 offseason, he earned 4.3M social engagements (nearly 2.5x as many as baseball’s second most-engaging player) partly thanks to an infamous Twitter feud with Trevor Bauer. He also regularly post videos of a typical 25-year-old’s shenanigans on a fast-growing YouTube channel (pranking Little Leaguers and getting his first pedicure) and recently he launched a podcast. In a sport built on tradition, Bregman is a breath of fresh air for a new generation of fans.
